Samsung has shipped eSIM support on flagship handsets since the Galaxy S20, and on every S and Z model released since. That means the phone already in your pocket can carry your home SIM and a travel data plan at the same time — no shop queue at the airport, no fiddling with a plastic chip over a hotel sink. This guide covers how to install an eSIM on Samsung step by step, from scanning the QR code to the moment the data icon lights up in Bangkok or Lisbon.
Before you start: is your Galaxy eSIM ready?
Almost every Galaxy S and Z handset sold since 2020 supports eSIM, with two exceptions worth checking first. The first is regional: units bought in mainland China, Hong Kong and a handful of South Korean carrier batches ship with the eSIM chip disabled or absent. The second is carrier locking — a phone bought on a subsidised contract may refuse any profile that is not its own network. Thirty seconds settles it: open Settings, tap Connections, then SIM manager. If you see "Add eSIM" next to your physical SIM slot, you are ready. If that line is missing, our guide to eSIM compatibility lists the exact model codes that are affected.
| Galaxy model | eSIM support | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| S20, S21, S22 series | Yes | One eSIM + one physical SIM active at once |
| S23, S24, S25 series | Yes | Can store multiple profiles, two lines active |
| Z Fold 2 to Z Fold 7 | Yes | Install from the cover screen or unfolded, both work |
| Z Flip 3 onwards | Yes | Same menu path as the S series |
| A-series (A54, A55 and up) | Partial | Depends on region; check SIM manager |
| Chinese / Hong Kong variants | No | eSIM hardware disabled by region |
Install an eSIM on Samsung Galaxy: the QR code method
The whole process takes about two minutes on Wi-Fi, and you should do it at home rather than at the boarding gate. When you buy a travel eSIM for Samsung Galaxy you receive a QR code by email. That code carries the profile; scanning it downloads the profile onto the phone's embedded chip. There is no app to install and nothing to sign into. Here is the Samsung eSIM settings step by step sequence:
- Connect to Wi-Fi. The download needs an internet connection, and your home data is fine too.
- Open Settings → Connections → SIM manager.
- Tap Add eSIM, then Scan QR code from service provider.
- Point the camera at the QR code on another screen or a printout to activate the eSIM Samsung QR code flow.
- Confirm the download, then give the line a clear name such as "Japan trip" so you never confuse it with your home number.
- Leave the new line switched off until you land, unless your plan starts on first connection.
If you would rather rehearse all of this before spending anything, grab a free trial eSIM and run the install on your own Galaxy tonight — it takes less time than making a cup of tea.
Samsung Galaxy S24 eSIM setup and the S23/S25 generation
On One UI 6 and later the menu wording shifted slightly, which trips people up. The Samsung Galaxy S24 eSIM setup path is identical to older models, but the button now reads "Add eSIM" rather than "Add mobile plan", and after scanning you may be offered "Use dual SIM" as a follow-up prompt. Say yes. The S25 behaves the same way. If your carrier profile was transferred from an old phone during Smart Switch, both lines will already be listed and the new travel profile simply joins them.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip
Folding phones use exactly the same menu, but the camera geometry catches people out. For a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold eSIM install, unfold the device first: the QR scanner uses the rear camera array, and holding a half-folded phone over a laptop screen usually produces a blurry read. Z Flip owners should open the phone fully rather than scanning from the cover display. If the code will not read at all, every provider offers manual entry — tap "Enter activation code manually" and type the SM-DP+ address and activation string from your confirmation email.
Set your lines up so the right SIM does the right job
Installing the profile is half the job; telling the phone which line to use is what actually saves you money. Your usual SIM and number keep working alongside the eSIM, so calls and texts from family still arrive normally. What you want to avoid is your home SIM quietly downloading photo backups at roaming rates. Go back into SIM manager and set the preferences below once — they persist for the whole trip.
| Setting | Set to | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile data | Travel eSIM | All browsing and maps use the cheap plan |
| Calls | Home SIM | Keeps your number reachable |
| Messages | Home SIM | Bank codes and 2FA still arrive |
| Data roaming (on eSIM) | On | Travel eSIMs are technically roaming profiles |
| Data roaming (on home SIM) | Off | Blocks accidental carrier charges |
Install before you fly, activate when you land.
Two minutes at home beats an hour at the airport.
If the eSIM will not activate
Roughly nine out of ten failed installs come down to four causes, and all of them are fixable in under five minutes. Work down this list in order before contacting anyone:
- No Wi-Fi during download. The profile cannot install over a dead connection — reconnect and rescan.
- QR code already used. A profile can only be downloaded once. Delete the half-installed line, then request a fresh code.
- Data roaming left off. Enable it on the travel line only; without it the eSIM shows bars but moves no data.
- Wrong line set for mobile data. Check SIM manager again after landing, as some Galaxy models revert to the last used network.
- No manual network selection. Set network mode to Automatic, or pick a partner operator by hand if the phone latches onto a weak one.
Once you are connected, you can watch your consumption in real time from your browser on the data tracking page — no app, no widget, no battery drain. Our broader installation guide covers the same steps for other handsets if you travel with a second device.
Do you actually need a travel eSIM?
Sometimes the honest answer is no, and we would rather say so. If you live in the EU and are travelling within the EU, your domestic bundle almost certainly roams at no extra cost under the roam-like-at-home rules — buying anything extra is money wasted. The same goes for short hops of a day or two where hotel Wi-Fi covers everything you need. Where a travel plan earns its keep is long-haul: a fortnight in Japan on carrier roaming can cost more than the flight's seat selection, while a local data plan runs a few pounds. If you are still weighing destinations, browse the most popular destinations and compare before you commit. And if you are unsure whether a spare handset can take a profile at all, the list of phones that support eSIM answers it in one scroll.
