The QR code lands in your inbox within minutes of checkout, and installation normally takes about two minutes with no app to download. So when the camera refuses to bite, or the screen answers with a red line of text, the whole thing suddenly feels broken. In practice, an eSIM QR code not working is almost never a faulty code — it is one of six ordinary causes, and five of them you can clear from your sofa before the kettle boils.
Read the error message first: it tells you which fault you have
Phones are bad at explaining themselves, but each wording points at a different failure. Before you retry the scan for the fifth time, match what you are seeing against the table below — it saves you fixing the wrong thing.
| What the screen says | What it usually means | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| "Invalid QR code" / "Code not recognised" | The image is cropped, blurred or too small to decode | Open the original email at full size on a second screen |
| "This code is no longer valid" / "already used" | The profile has already been downloaded once | Check your existing lines before doing anything else |
| "Unable to add cellular plan" | Weak Wi-Fi, or the server call timed out | Switch network, restart, scan again |
| Camera simply does nothing | You are scanning from the wrong place in Settings | Use Settings → Mobile Data → Add eSIM, not the photo app |
| "Plan cannot be added at this time" | Carrier-locked or unsupported handset | Confirm the device is unlocked and eSIM-capable |
"Already used" is the most misread error of all
An eSIM QR code already used message means the profile was downloaded once — it does not mean your data has vanished. Every eSIM QR code is single-use by design: the moment a handset pulls the profile down, the code is spent, exactly like a cinema ticket that has been through the scanner. Ninety per cent of the time, the profile is already sitting on the very phone you are holding.
- You scanned it earlier and forgot. Open Settings and look for a second line, often unlabelled or named after a partner network. It is there, switched off.
- The scan half-worked. The download completed but the confirmation screen was dismissed, so it never felt finished.
- You tried to install it on a second device. One code equals one handset — a tablet cannot share the phone's profile.
If none of those apply and the line genuinely is not on the device, that is a real eSIM activation problem and a reissue is the answer: email contact@wellroam.com with your order number and a replacement code is generated.
What never causes it
Screenshotting the code, forwarding the email, or opening it on a laptop does not "use up" anything. Only an actual profile download does.
When the camera will not read the code at all
If your eSIM QR code won't scan, the problem is optical rather than digital. The decoder needs sharp black-and-white contrast and a reasonable amount of screen real estate, and travellers routinely deprive it of both.
- Brightness too low. Push the display showing the code to maximum and switch off any blue-light or dark-mode filter.
- The code is too small. A code viewed on a smartwatch or a phone held at arm's length rarely decodes. Use a laptop screen or print it at least 4 cm across.
- A cropped screenshot. Cutting off the quiet white margin around the square breaks it. Keep the whole image.
- You are trying to scan the phone's own screen. A handset cannot photograph itself — this is the single most common cause of an invalid eSIM QR code report.
- A dirty lens or thick case. Wipe it, and step back 15–20 cm.
The five-minute fix sequence, in order
Work through these in sequence and stop as soon as you have a line. This is the same order our support team uses, and most tickets close at step three.
- Connect to stable Wi-Fi. Profile downloads fail on flaky airport or café networks more than anywhere else.
- Check for an existing profile. Settings → Mobile Data. If the line is already there, you never needed to rescan.
- Restart the handset. A stale connection to the provisioning server clears instantly with a reboot.
- Open the code on a second screen and scan from inside Settings, not from the camera or gallery app.
- Fall back to manual entry using the details printed under the code in your email.
- Ask for a reissue if the server still refuses. A human replies by email.
Once the profile installs and the line comes alive, you can confirm everything is genuinely flowing by watching your usage in real time on the data tracking page — straight from your browser, with nothing to install.
Scan at home, on Wi-Fi you trust.
One code, one phone, one download.
How to reinstall an eSIM without a QR code
Every QR code is just a picture of two text strings, which you can type in by hand. That is the reliable escape hatch when the camera route fails, and it is how to reinstall an eSIM without a QR code on practically any modern handset. Your email lists an SM-DP+ address (something like rsp.provider.com) and an activation code.
- iPhone: Settings → Mobile Data → Add eSIM → Use QR Code → Enter Details Manually.
- Android: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Download a SIM instead → Need help? → Enter it manually.
Type the address without https://, leave the confirmation field blank unless one was supplied, and give it 30 seconds. If you have never done this before, our full eSIM installation guide shows both routes screen by screen.
eSIM QR code not scanning on iPhone
iOS will not let you add a plan while Screen Time restrictions, a Mobile Data lock or an unfinished iOS update is pending. Update first, then retry. If the camera preview opens but never locks on, the code is almost certainly too small or too dim.
Android variations
Samsung, Pixel and Xiaomi bury the menu in different places, and a handful of older Android 10 devices ship without proper eSIM support even when the menu exists. Confirm yours on our list of eSIM compatible phones before spending another twenty minutes on it.
When it was never the QR code
Sometimes the code is perfect and the handset is the obstacle. Carrier-locked phones bought on contract frequently refuse third-party profiles outright, and no amount of rescanning changes that — your original operator has to unlock it. Equally, a phone with a full eSIM slot list may need an old profile deleted first. If the line installs but simply carries no data once you land, that is a different diagnosis entirely, and our eSIM troubleshooting notes cover roaming switches and APN settings separately.
Worth saying plainly: you may not need a travel eSIM at all. EU residents roaming inside the EU are usually covered by roam-like-at-home rules already, and a two-night city break with hotel Wi-Fi and offline maps can genuinely be enough. For everything else — long-haul trips, road journeys, the most popular destinations — a local data plan still beats standard roaming charges by a wide margin.
Where to go next
Fixing the code is step one; the rest of the setup deserves five more minutes. Read the installation walkthrough for the clean two-minute version, check the device compatibility list if you are unsure about your handset, browse more fixes for common problems, or dig into country guides before you book. Anything still unclear is answered on the FAQ page, and a person replies at contact@wellroam.com.
Rather rehearse the whole thing before your trip depends on it? Order a free trial eSIM, scan it tonight on your own phone, and you will know exactly how your handset behaves long before you are standing in an arrivals hall.
