What is an eSIM and how does it work?
An eSIM is a digital SIM built into your phone, tablet, or smartwatch. It connects you to mobile data without a plastic card or store visit. You simply download a plan online and get connected in minutes — wherever you are.
What is an eSIM?
An eSIM is a built-in digital SIM card inside your phone, tablet, or smartwatch. It works like a regular SIM, just without the plastic or swapping cards. Instead of inserting anything, you download a data plan directly to your device and connect within seconds.
Once activated, your eSIM gives you instant access to mobile data in the countries your plan covers — perfect for travel, remote work, or staying online abroad. Most newer phones already support eSIM.
You can also keep your regular SIM for calls and use your eSIM just for data. Switch between networks in a few taps, stay connected the moment you land, and skip roaming fees or delivery delays.

How does an eSIM work?
1. Check your device
First, make sure your phone can use eSIM. Most newer models already support it. You can check this in seconds with the Device Compatibility Checker in the Ohayu app.
Download the app on your iPhone or Android, tap the question mark icon in the top-right corner, and choose Device compatibility check. The app will tell you right away if your device is eSIM-ready.
2. Choose your data plan
Next, pick where you’re going and how much data you’ll need — whether it’s for a short trip or a longer stay. All Ohayu country plans are prepaid, with no contracts, roaming fees, or extra costs.
If you travel frequently or move between countries, our Global eSIM plans make it easy to stay connected without switching SIMs.
3. Install and connect
Once you’ve purchased your plan, follow a few quick steps to install your eSIM. It activates instantly the moment you reach your destination, so you can land, connect, and start browsing right away.
Key benefits of using an Ohayu eSIM
An eSIM makes staying connected simple. No plastic cards, no roaming surprises, no store visits. Here’s why more travelers are switching to Ohayu eSIM.
Use your favorite apps abroad
Book rides, find local restaurants, and share your trip in real time. Stay online and keep using the apps you rely on every day.
No roaming fees
You get exactly the data you pay for — no need to worry about extra or hidden fees. Ohayu connects you through local carriers, so you skip the roaming costs and only pay local rates.
Multiple local carriers
Stay connected through more than one local network. If one signal drops, another picks up.
Flexible data plans
Pick what fits your trip. Ohayu offers local and global plans in different sizes and durations — from short city breaks to longer journeys.
Running low on data? You can top up anytime in the Ohayu app.
Keep your main number
Use your eSIM for data while keeping your regular SIM for calls and texts. Stay online abroad while friends and services can still reach you on your usual number.
No physical card needed
Activate your plan digitally. No paperwork, trays or waiting for delivery.
Is my device eSIM compatible?
To use an eSIM, your device must meet two conditions:
- It must support eSIM technology.
- It must be unlocked and not tied to any carrier.
If even one of these conditions isn’t met, your eSIM won’t activate. Below you’ll find quick ways to check both.
1. How to check if your device supports eSIM technology
Check Our Compatibility Guide
- Visit our Compatibility Guide to see if your phone supports eSIM. This guide provides a comprehensive list of eSIM-supported devices.
Ohayu automatic device compatibility check
- Install the Ohayu app on your iPhone or Android device.
- Open the app and tap the “?” icon in the top-right corner.
3. Select “Device compatibility check"
4.The app will instantly tell you if your device supports eSIM.
Dial *#06# to verify if eSIM works on your device
You can dial this code for free to check your device’s eSIM compatibility. This is a free request to the system (not a call). If an EID number appears on the screen, your phone supports eSIM.
Check compatibility in settings
You can also verify eSIM support directly in your phone’s settings.
eSIM compatibility check on iOS (iPhone)
- Go to Settings.
- Tap Mobile Service or Cellular.
- If you see "Add eSIM" button, your device is compatible.
eSIM compatibility check on Android
- Go to Settings.
- Tap Connections.
- Tap SIM manager.
- If you see "Add eSIM" option, your device is compatible.
2. How to check if your device is not carrier-locked
If your phone is carrier-locked, it can only use SIMs from one specific mobile provider. This means it won’t accept or activate an Ohayu eSIM until it’s unlocked. You can check the lock status in your settings or by contacting your carrier directly.
Check carrier-lock in settings
Carrier-lock check on iOS (iPhone)
- Go to Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap About.
- If Network Provider Lock says "No SIM restrictions", your phone is unlocked.
Carrier-lock check on Android
- Go to Settings.
- Tap Connections.
- Tap Mobile networks.
- Select Network Operators.
- Turn off the automatic selection.
- If several networks are shown, the phone is probably unlocked.
Check carrier-lock manually
Insert a SIM card from a different carrier. If it works, your phone does not have a carrier lock.
Contact your carrier
If you’re not sure whether your phone has a carrier lock, contact your mobile carrier. Ask them to check the lock status and unlock the device if needed. Most carriers can do it remotely in just a few minutes, as long as your contract or payments are up to date.
How do I choose how much GB of data I need?
Before you buy your eSIM plan, think about what you do most — watch videos, listen to music, scroll social media, or navigate with maps.
Streaming movies or making video calls will use much more data than checking emails or browsing the web.
Generally speaking, we divide our users into 3 groups:
- Light users: we recommend 1-3 GB (basic online activities: checking emails, browsing news, usings maps from time to time)
- Moderate users: we recommend 5-10 GB (regular daily use: actively scrolling social media, streaming music, and watching standard-quality video)
- Heavy users: we recommend +10GB (intensive data consumption: streaming HD movies and series, online gaming, and frequent mobile hotspot us)
How much data do everyday activities use?
Each activity uses a different amount of GB, and finding the right balance helps you stay connected without running out or paying for data you won’t use. Mobile data is measured in kilobytes (KB), megabytes (MB), and gigabytes (GB).
1 GB equals 1,024 MB, and 1 MB equals 1,024 KB.
Messaging and video calls
Messaging apps like WhatsApp or Messenger use very little data — about 50 MB per hour.
Video calls use more, around 200–300 MB per hour, depending on quality.
Navigation apps
Navigation apps use very little data — around 3–5 MB per hour for standard maps. If you use live traffic updates or rerouting, it can rise to about 10–20 MB per hour. Satellite and Street View modes use the most.
You can save data by downloading offline maps before your trip. A city map usually takes 100–300 MB, and once it’s downloaded, turn-by-turn navigation works even without a connection. Real-time traffic still needs a small amount of data.
Browsing the web
Browsing the internet uses very little data. Most web pages take about 1–3 MB to load. An hour of light browsing usually adds up to 50 MB or less.
Pages with many images, ads, or videos use more. News sites and social media feeds often consume the most data per visit.
Streaming music
Streaming music doesn’t use much data, but it adds up over time. At standard quality (160 kbps), one hour of listening uses about 70 MB. At high quality (320 kbps), it’s roughly 115 MB per hour — around 1 GB for eight hours of playback.
To save data, download your playlists on Wi-Fi and listen offline. Most apps like Spotify, Apple Music, or TIDAL let you store songs for later.
Social media
Social media apps vary a lot in how much data they use. Text-based platforms like Twitter or Threads use around 300–400 MB per hour. Image-heavy apps such as Instagram or Facebook use about 500–600 MB per hour. Video-based platforms like TikTok or Snapchat can reach 700–900 MB per hour.
The more videos and stories you watch, the faster your data runs out. Uploading photos and reels also increases consumption.
Watching videos
Video streaming uses more data than any other activity. At standard definition (SD), one hour takes about 700 MB. In high definition (HD), it jumps to around 3 GB per hour. Streaming in 4K can use over 7 GB in the same time.
A two-hour movie in HD can easily consume 6 GB of data. If you plan to stream while traveling, it’s smart to lower video quality or download shows in advance using Wi-Fi.
Some streaming platforms, like Netflix, let you control how much data you use. Netflix offers four settings for data usage per device:
- Low: Basic video quality, up to 0.3 GB per hour
- Medium: Standard quality, up to 0.7 GB per hour
- High: Best quality
• up to 1 GB in SD
• up to 3 GB in HD
• up to 7 GB in Ultra HD (4K)
Never run out of data with Ohayu
It’s hard to predict exactly how much data a trip will take — one day you’re streaming maps, the next you’re watching videos offline. With Ohayu, you don’t have to get it perfect from the start.
Pick any plan that fits your trip, and if you ever need more, just top up in seconds. You can add extra data directly in the Ohayu app without changing your eSIM or losing connection.
Stay flexible, stay online, and forget about running out of data halfway through your journey.

Easy installation
Follow a few quick steps to install your eSIM, and you’re ready to go.
If you install it before your flight, it will activate automatically when you arrive at your destination.
Should I buy my eSIM data plan before traveling or when I arrive at my destination?
You can do either — but it’s best to buy and install your eSIM before you travel.
That way, you’ll land with everything ready to go and can connect to the network as soon as your plane touches down.
If you prefer, you can also buy and activate your eSIM after arrival. It only takes a few steps to install and start browsing — just remember that you’ll need a stable internet connection (Wi-Fi or mobile data) to complete the installation.
For most travelers, setting it up in advance is the easiest way to avoid airport Wi-Fi and stay online from the moment you arrive.
Benefits of buying your eSIM before your trip
Connect the moment you land
Skip the search for Wi-Fi or local SIM cards. If you install your eSIM before reaching your destination, it will activate automatically once you arrive — so you’re online within seconds.
Skip airport lines and tourist markups
No need to queue at kiosks or overpay for tourist SIMs with hidden fees and additional paperwork.
Travel stress-free
Set everything up at home and enjoy peace of mind knowing your data is ready.
Your plan starts when you do
No need to worry about wasted days. Your eSIM’s validity period begins only after activation, so every day you pay for goes toward actual use.

Can I keep my WhatsApp / Telegram number while using eSIM?
Yes — your WhatsApp or Telegram number stays the same.
Ohayu eSIMs don’t include a phone number, but that doesn’t affect your apps. Both use your existing number only for identification, not for the connection itself.
How it works
Once you verify your account, WhatsApp and Telegram keep working through any internet connection — Wi-Fi or mobile data from your Ohayu eSIM.
Your number, chats, and contacts stay exactly as they are. The eSIM simply gives you data to stay online while abroad.
Why this setup works so well
You get local data rates abroad, skip roaming costs, and still chat with friends and family on the same WhatsApp or Telegram account — all with your Ohayu eSIM.
Can I make phone calls or send SMS?
No — Ohayu eSIMs are data-only, but you can still make regular calls or send SMS using your primary SIM card.
How to stay in touch
You can still make calls and send messages using internet-based apps such as WhatsApp, Telegram, FaceTime, or Messenger.
These apps use your eSIM’s data connection to reach anyone — no phone number required.
Tip for travelers
If you need to receive SMS (for example, for banking codes or verification), keep your regular SIM active in dual-SIM mode.
Use your Ohayu eSIM for data and your main SIM for texts or calls when needed.
How secure is an eSIM compared to traditional SIM cards?
eSIMs offer excellent security features:
- Embedded Security: Harder to lose or steal since they are built into your device.
- Advanced Protection: Support remote provisioning and management.
- Same Security Level: Enjoy the same level of security as traditional SIM cards with added benefits.

Are there any specific settings required to use an Wellroam eSIM?
To use an Wellroam eSIM, your device must meet two basic conditions:
- It must be eSIM compatible.
- It must be unlocked (not tied to any carrier).
If you’re unsure, check our detailed guide: Is my device eSIM compatible?
Once your device meets these requirements, everything else is straightforward. The setup process is shown in the Installation Guide, and it usually takes less than few minutes.
Your installed eSIM will connect as soon as you reach your destination.
Where do I find my QR code for eSIM installation?
You can find your QR code in your personal account — either in the Wellroam app or on our website.
- Log in to your account.
- Go to the “My eSIMs” tab.
- Click “Install eSIM” next to your purchased plan.
- You’ll see the Installation Guide with three options:
• Direct installation (the fastest method) (only for iPhones)

To confirm that your eSIM is active and ready, follow these quick steps:
Check the status in the “My eSIMs” tab
- Open the Wellroam app or website and go to the My eSIMs section. If your plan shows as Actived, your eSIM is activated properly.
Look for the network signal indicator
- When your eSIM is active and enabled in your phone’s settings, you’ll see signal bars or icons like 4G, 5G, or LTE in the status bar—just as with a regular SIM.

Having problems with an eSIM?
If your eSIM is not activating, check our Why is my eSIM not activating? guide.
If your eSIM is active but not working, see Why is my eSIM not working?.
You can always contact our 24/7 support team, who will gladly help you resolve any issue.
What do I need to enter instead of APN settings?
You don’t need to worry about APN (Access Point Name) settings when using our eSIM.
The eSIM is designed to automatically configure your device with the correct settings upon installation, so you can enjoy seamless connectivity without any manual input.
Just install the eSIM, and you’re good to go!
Can I use the data plan for hotspot?
Yes, you can.
Wellroam eSIMs let you share your data connection with other devices using a personal hotspot.
To turn it on, open your phone’s Settings, tap Personal Hotspot, and switch it ON.
Your other devices can then connect to your mobile data just like a Wi-Fi network.
Stay connected across all your devices — anytime, anywhere.
Does my eSIM come with a phone number?
No. Ohayu eSIMs are data-only.
They give you fast internet for browsing, navigation, and apps — but they don’t include a phone number for voice calls or SMS.
How to stay in touch
You can still call and message through internet-based apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, FaceTime, or Messenger.
These apps use your eSIM’s data connection, so you don’t need a phone number to stay connected.
Tip for travelers
If you need to receive SMS (for example, for banking or verification codes), keep your primary SIM active in dual-SIM mode.
Use your Wellroam eSIM for data and your main SIM for texts or calls when needed.
How long will my eSIM remain active, and what happens when it expires?
Each of our country eSIM plans comes with a specific validity period to suit different needs.
When choosing a data plan, please note the 'Validity' period. This indicates how long your eSIM will stay active from the moment it’s activated on your device, not from the date of purchase.
Once your eSIM expires, you will not be able to use any data, even if you did not use it all within the given period. You will need to purchase a new plan to continue enjoying seamless data services.
If you travel often, we also offer Global eSIM subscriptions — billed monthly and renewed automatically every 30 days.
Your unused data rolls over to the next month, so nothing goes to waste.
Are there any speed restrictions on the data plans?
No. Wellroam eSIMs come with no speed limits or throttling.
You’ll get the same high-speed data as local users, so you can browse, stream, and work online without interruptions — wherever you are.
If you experience slow internet, check our Troubleshooting guide: Why is my data speed slow?, or contact our 24/7 support team, who will be happy to help.
Can I use my eSIM in a different country, aside from the one I purchased it for?
Wellroam eSIM plans are made for use in the specific country or region listed on the plan. This gives you the best possible coverage and connection quality while traveling.
Tip for multi-country trips:
If your journey includes several destinations, you can buy multiple eSIMs and switch between them — most eSIM compatible phones can store more than one eSIM.
For an easier option, choose our Global Subscription Plans, which give you high-speed coverage in 112 countries with a single eSIM.
How do I check how much data I have left?
You can easily check your remaining data in just a few simple steps:
- Log in to your account on the website or in the app.
- Go to the “My eSIMs” tab.
- Next to your purchased plan, you’ll see your remaining data shown as both a percentage and an exact amount.
Stay informed and in control of your data wherever you go!
Can I purchase the eSIM but not activate it right away?
Yes — you can buy your country eSIM and activate your it anytime within 30 days of purchase.
All your purchased eSIMs are available in the “My eSIMs” tab in the Ohayu app or on our website. When you’re ready, simply install and activate your chosen plan.
For country eSIMs, the validity period starts only once you activate the plan on your device.
Please note: Global Subscription works differently. For Global Subscriptions, the validity begins from the date of purchase.
Tip: Install your eSIM before your trip to ensure a smooth connection. If everything is set up correctly, it will automatically activate once you reach your destination.
How do I delete the eSIM from my device?
If you’ve finished your trip or no longer need a specific plan, you can easily remove your eSIM from your phone’s settings. The process takes less than a minute.
iOS (iPhone)
- Go to Settings
- Tap Mobile Service or Cellular
- Select the eSIM you want to delete
- Click “Delete eSIM”
- Confirm the deletion
Android
- Go to Settings
- Tap Connections
- Tap SIM manager
- Select the eSIM you want to delete
- Click “Remove”
- Confirm the deletion
Can I use my eSIM while I'm on a cruise ship or in open waters?
Usually no. Cruise ships use satellite “maritime” networks, and our eSIM plans do not cover those networks. Your eSIM will work on land and often near the coast, then lose service at sea.
What to do
- Use the ship’s Wi-Fi while at sea.
- Turn data back on when you dock. Your eSIM should reconnect to a local carrier in port.
- Ask your cruise line which connectivity options they offer before you sail.
How do I top-up my eSIM?
What is a top-up?
A top-up means buying more data for your existing eSIM. You keep the same QR code, same installation, and everything works like before - just with more data added.
This works only for eSIMs that support top-ups. If your eSIM supports it, you’ll see the “Add Data” button next to it.
How to add more data
- Go to the eSIM you would like to add data to
- Tap Add data
- You’ll see a list of available data packages
- Select the amount you want and continue to payment
- Once payment is complete, your eSIM will be updated with more data
Why is my eSIM not activating? [iPhone, Android]
Reasons why your eSIM is not activating: you’re not yet in your destination country, the eSIM wasn’t installed correctly, data roaming or mobile data is off, too many eSIMs are active, or network settings need a quick reset.
If your eSIM isn’t activating, it doesn’t always mean something’s wrong. In many cases, the solution is simple — like being in the right place or toggling the right setting. Below you’ll find a step-by-step checklist to get your eSIM working. The steps look a little different for iOS (iPhone 16) and Android (Samsung Galaxy S20), so just follow the part that matches your phone.
You are not in your destination country
The first thing you should know is this: if you haven’t reached your destination yet, it’s normal for the eSIM to be inactive. It only switches on once your phone connects to a local network in the country you’re traveling to. Arrive, wait a moment for a signal, and try again.
Until then, you may see “activating,” “activation failure,” or no internet at all — that’s fine. You already installed the eSIM but it's just waiting for the right network. It won’t activate at your home airport, during a layover, or while you’re still in transit.
Check if the eSIM was properly installed
If your eSIM isn’t activating, it might not be installed correctly. Check your phone settings to confirm whether the eSIM profile appears — if it’s missing, you’ll need to reinstall it by following our Installation Guide.

Why is my eSIM not working? [iPhone, Android]
Reasons why your eSIM is not working are: incompatible device, carrier lock, incorrect installation, or network setting issues. Most issues are quick to fix once you know where to look. Whether your eSIM never activated, stopped working mid-trip, or just lost connection for no clear reason, start by checking the list below to troubleshoot each step quickly and safely.
1. Your device is not eSIM-compatible
If your phone doesn’t support eSIM, it won’t be able to download or use any digital SIM profile. This issue usually affects older phone models that were released before eSIM became standard or budget models. Check if your device is eSIM-compatible using one of the options below or see our Compatibility Guide for the full list.
Ohayu automatic device compatibility check
- Install the Wellroam app on your iPhone or Android device.
- Open the app and tap the “?” icon in the top-right corner.
- Select “Device compatibility check".
- The app will instantly tell you if your device supports eSIM.
Dial *#06# to verify if eSIM works on your device
- You can dial this code for free to check your device’s eSIM compatibility.
2. Your phone is carrier-locked (SIM-locked)
If your phone is carrier-locked, it can only use SIMs from one specific mobile provider. This means it won’t accept or activate an Wellroam eSIM until it’s unlocked.
3. Your device software is outdated
If your phone runs an outdated version of iOS or Android, it can cause connection issues or prevent your eSIM from working correctly. Update your software to the latest version to ensure full eSIM compatibility and stable network performance.
Update software on iOS (iPhone)
- Go to Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap Software Update.
- Choose Update Now.
Update software on Android
- Go to Settings.
- Tap Software update.
- Tap Download and install, confirm.
4. You don’t have a stable internet connection during installation
You need to have a reliable internet connection in order to install the eSIM. We recommend using a strong Wi-Fi connection during installation, as mobile data can drop or switch networks mid-process.
For the smoothest setup, it’s best to install your eSIM before you travel, while you still have access to a stable and secure network. Remember, that it only relates to the installation, you should activate eSIM only in your destination country.
5. Your VPN might be the reason why your eSIM is not working
VPNs or proxy apps often break the connection your phone needs to activate an eSIM. When you use a VPN, your traffic takes a different route, and the carrier’s server might never receive the activation request. Here is how to fix it:
- Turn off your VPN, proxy, or Apple’s Private Relay feature.
- Wait 10-15 seconds for your device to refresh the network connection.
- Try installing or activating the eSIM again.
Once activation is complete, you can safely turn your VPN back on.
6. You have enterprise or MDM restrictions
If your company, school, or organization manages your phone, the IT department might control which SIM profiles you can add or remove. Enterprise or MDM (mobile device management) policies often block eSIM installation, data plan changes, or even access to certain network settings. How to check:
- On iPhone: Settings > General > VPN & Device Management.
- On Android: Settings > Security > Device admin apps or Work profile settings.
If you see a work or organization profile, contact your IT administrator and ask them to temporarily allow eSIM setup. Once approved, you can install the eSIM normally.
7. You are in a weak or no-coverage area
If you’re in an area with a weak signal or no coverage, your eSIM won’t be able to connect. This often happens underground, inside large buildings, or in crowded places like concerts and stadiums where networks get overloaded.
If you suspect a coverage issue, check network availability on nperf.com/map or gsma.com/coverage. Select your destination country and local operator to see detailed coverage maps.
You can find the list of supported operators for your plan on the country page of our website or directly in your Ohayu profile. For example, if you’re using a United States plan, your eSIM connects through local partners such as AT&T, Verizon, or T-Mobile.
8. Your device requires a simple restart
A simple restart often solves temporary problems with eSIM not working. Rebooting or toggling Airplane Mode refreshes the system and clears small network issues that might block your eSIM from connecting.

If your phone can’t find a signal automatically, open your network settings and choose a local carrier from the list.
Try each available option to see which one connects best in your location.
Uninstall and install eSIM again in the target country
If the eSIM was installed before your trip, reinstall it once you arrive - sometimes it helps.
When to contact support
If your eSIM still won’t activate after checking the steps above, contact Ohayu Support at support@Wellroam.com or directly through the Ohayu app. Include your order number and screenshots of your Mobile Data or SIM Manager page so the team can assist you faster.
Can I add an eSIM to a network or carrier-locked phone?
If your phone is locked to a specific network, your eSIM won’t work. A locked device can’t connect to eSIMs from other providers — including Wellroam — until it’s unlocked. However, you can try contacting your network provider and ask them to unlock the phone remotely, especially if the phone is fully paid off.
What does “carrier-locked” mean?
A carrier-locked phone — sometimes also called network-locked or SIM-locked — is a mobile device that can only work with one specific mobile network operator. The carrier or manufacturer sets this limitation, usually by adding software that restricts which SIM cards or eSIM profiles the phone can use.
A carrier-locked phone only recognizes and connects to SIMs or eSIMs from that network. For example, a phone bought through AT&T may refuse to activate a T-Mobile or Wellroam eSIM. If you try, the device might display messages such as “SIM not supported”, “Network locked”, or “Unable to complete cellular plan activation.”
In short, carriers lock phones on purpose so they work only on one mobile network until you unlock them.
Can I use an eSIM on a locked phone?
The short and direct answer is no — in almost all cases, you can’t use an eSIM from another provider on a locked phone. A carrier lock restricts your device to one network, and this rule applies equally to both physical SIM cards and embedded eSIMs.
If you try to install an eSIM from another provider, your phone will simply block the activation because it doesn’t recognize that network as authorized. Think of it like a gatekeeper — if your eSIM’s “name” isn’t on the carrier’s approved list, it won’t get access.
The only exception happens when you add an eSIM from the same carrier that locked your phone. But if you want to use an affordable local or travel eSIM, you’ll need to unlock your device first. Once unlocked, your phone can freely connect to any compatible network worldwide. You can check if your device supports eSIM in our compatibility guide.
Why carriers lock phones
Carriers lock phones to control which networks those devices can use. The carrier’s lock ties your phone to its own SIMs and eSIM profiles, so other networks can’t activate service until you remove it. If your eSIM doesn’t activate after unlocking your phone, see why your eSIM isn’t activating.
The main reasons are:
- Subsidy and financing recovery. When a carrier sells a device at a discount or on installments, it locks the phone to make sure you pay the full bill before switching to another network.
- Customer retention. Locks reduce churn during the initial contract or commitment period.
- Fraud and theft deterrence. Limiting a device to one network can make it less attractive to resell quickly after purchase with stolen payment details.
- Technical and policy control. Some carriers restrict features, firmware updates, or network settings to match their policies and testing.
Policies vary by country and carrier. In the U.S., new phones are commonly locked for a short window (for example, many devices auto-unlock after about 60 days). Since 2017, Canada requires phones to be sold unlocked, and since 2021, the UK has moved to selling new handsets unlocked as well. If your phone came from a carrier on finance, it may stay locked until the account is in good standing or the device is paid off.
Consumer and digital rights groups, such as Public Knowledge in the United States, have long argued against carrier locking. They point out that it limits competition, makes travel harder, and stops people from reusing or reselling many older devices.
How to check if your phone has a carrier lock
Checking the lock status takes less than a minute — you can do it directly in your phone settings or by inserting another SIM card.
Check if your iPhone has a carrier-lock (iOS)
- Go to Settings
- Tap General
- Tap About
- If Network Provider Lock says “No sim restrictions”, your phone doesn't have a carrier-lock.
Check if your Android has a carrier-lock
- Go to Settings
- Tap Connections
- Tap Mobile networks
- Select Network Operators
- Turn off the automatic selection
- If you see several networks on the list, your phone probably doesn't have a carrier lock.
Manual check with a different SIM card
If you’re unsure, the simplest way is to try another SIM from a different carrier:
If you insert the SIM card and your phone shows signal bars, it means your device doesn't have a lock.
If it shows “SIM not supported”, “Network locked”, or asks for an unlock code, your device is carrier-locked.
Check lock status through your carrier
You can always contact your mobile carrier directly and ask them if they locked your device.
Most providers can check this instantly if you provide them your IMEI number (found in Settings → About phone or by dialing *#06#).
How to unlock a carrier-locked phone
If your phone has a carrier-lock, just contact your carrier and ask them to remove the restriction. In most countries, carriers unlock your phone once you finish paying for it or complete your contract. It’s free, usually takes only a few minutes, and can be done remotely. Once your device is unlocked, you can easily use a travel eSIM abroad.
How to unlock Verizon device
Verizon locks all newly purchased devices for the first 60 days to help prevent theft and fraud. After that period, Verizon unlocks the phones — as long as no one has reported them lost, stolen, or purchased fraudulently.
- Postpaid phones: Locked for 60 days after purchase (or activation if bought from an authorized retailer). After 60 days, Verizon automatically removes the lock.
- Prepaid phones: Locked for 60 days after paid activation. Once the line has been active and in good standing for 60 days, Verizon automatically unlocks the device.
- Military exception: Active-duty military customers deployed outside Verizon’s coverage area can request an unlock once their account is verified and has been active for at least 60 days.
After the 60-day period, Verizon does not re-lock devices under any circumstances.
For full details, visit Verizon’s official policy page.
How to unlock T-Mobile device
T-Mobile locks new devices to its network until they meet specific eligibility requirements. Once your phone becomes eligible, T-Mobile unlocks it within two business days — as long as the device supports remote unlocking.
- Postpaid phones: Must be active on T-Mobile for at least 40 days, fully paid off, and linked to an account in good standing.
- Prepaid phones: Must be active for 365 days, or have over $100 in refills since activation and be active for at least 14 days.
- Military exception: Active-duty military customers can request an immediate unlock with deployment papers.
T-Mobile unlocks only the devices it sells, as long as no one has reported them lost or stolen and they meet all payment and account requirements.
For full details, visit T-Mobile’s official policy page.
How to unlock AT&T device
AT&T allows customers to unlock their devices once they meet certain eligibility requirements. Most Apple, Samsung, and Google devices automatically unlock after meeting the criteria.
- Postpaid phones: Must be active for at least 60 days, fully paid off, and linked to an account in good standing. You can’t unlock the device if someone has reported it as lost, stolen, or involved in fraud.
- Prepaid phones: Must have at least six months of paid AT&T service before becoming eligible for unlocking.
- Military exception: Active-duty military customers can request an immediate unlock by providing deployment orders.
Sign in to your myAT&T account or insert a non-AT&T SIM card to see whether your carrier has unlocked your device.
For more details and to submit an unlock request, visit AT&T’s official policy page.

Why is my data speed slow?
We never slow down speeds of your eSIM. If your data feels slow, it’s usually caused by local network conditions or device settings. Here’s what you can check and try:
1. Check your network coverage
Poor signal is the most common reason for reduced speed. Try moving to an open space or near a window for a stronger connection.
You can view live coverage maps here:
For example: if you’re using a United States plan, your eSIM connects through local partners such as AT&T, Verizon, or T-Mobile.
You can find the full list of supported operators on the country page.
2. Watch out for weak signal zones
You may also experience weaker signal in:
- Trains and subways
- Buildings with many metal elements (metal blocks electromagnetic waves)
- Thick-walled or older stone buildings (such as medieval structures in Europe)
3. Avoid crowded areas
In busy places like airports, concerts, or stadiums, many people share the same network. This can slow down data for everyone. Try moving to a quieter area or waiting a few minutes.
4. Check your device settings
Make sure Data Roaming is enabled and your Wellroam eSIM is selected for Mobile Data.
Check that your phone doesn’t have data saver or usage limits enabled, which can throttle your speed.
5. Restart your phone
Restarting resets your network connection and often restores full speed within seconds.

Do I need to install a new eSIM every month?
No — once your Global eSIM plan is installed, you don’t need to install it again.
Your subscription will auto-renew every 30 days, and your data plan will refresh automatically — no extra setup or reinstallation needed.
Any unused data will roll over to the next month, so you never lose what you’ve already paid for.
What will happen if I need internet in a country that is not on the list?
If you’re traveling to a country that isn’t covered — don’t worry.
You can simply buy a separate local plan for that destination directly from the Welroam app or website.
Most eSIM-compatible phones let you store multiple eSIMs at the same time, and switching between them takes just a few taps — no need to reinstall anything.
You’re always free to activate the right plan when you need it.
Can I upgrade or downgrade my plan?
Yes, you can upgrade or downgrade your plan at any time to better suit your needs.
If you’re running low on data or want to save more on a higher plan, upgrading is easy. Downgrading works the same way if you need less data. Simply select the plan that works best for you from your account.
What will happen to unused GBs if I upgrade my plan?
Good news! Any unused GBs from your current plan will carry over when you upgrade.
They’ll be added to your new plan, so you won’t lose any data you’ve already paid for.
What will happen to unused GBs if I cancel the plan?
If you cancel your plan, you can still use any remaining data until the plan’s expiration date.
After that, any unused data will no longer be available, so we recommend using it up before the plan ends.
How does auto-renewal work?
Auto-renewal keeps your subscription active at all times — so you never lose internet access while traveling.
Your plan refreshes automatically every 30 days or yearly (depending on your billing cycle).
If you have unused data at the end of the period, it will roll over to the next cycle.
You can cancel auto-renewal at any time — and your eSIM will remain active until the end of the current billing period. No future charges will be made after that.
It’s flexible, hands-off, and designed for worry-free travel.
What happens if I use up all my data for the month?
If you run out of data, you have two options: you can restart your current subscription to top up your data immediately, or upgrade to a higher plan.
Upgrading not only gives you more data for this month but also helps you pay less per GB in the long run. Either way, you’ll always have an easy solution to stay connected.
