Your everyday.
A few extra gigs.
Directions to your hotel, a photo sent to friends or your playlist on the train: as soon as you leave Wi-Fi, your phone uses your plan’s mobile data.
When you travel, the same habits add up. Estimating them before you leave helps you pick a data amount that fits your pace.

How much data
your favourite activities use.
The averages used for this calculation. Actual usage depends mainly on resolution and content.
| Activity | Data / hour |
|---|---|
| Social media | 150 MB |
| Video streaming | 1 GB |
| Short videos | 1 GB |
| Music & podcasts | 100 MB |
| GPS & directions | 10 MB |
| Web browsing | 50 MB |
| Messages & email | 4 MB |
| Video calls | 1 GB |
| Downloads & updates | 300 MB |
1 GB = 1,000 MB. Downloads depend on file size; here, time is only a rough guide.
How do I choose the right number of GB?
Enter your off-Wi-Fi habits and the length of your trip. The total gives you a starting point; the suggestion adds a 20% buffer. Then check the data amount and validity of the plan you choose.
Is the result my exact usage?
It’s an estimate. The same hour of video can use very different amounts depending on the quality. Downloads and backups can also change the total.
What’s the difference between MB and GB?
These units measure amounts of data. For this calculation, 1 GB equals 1,000 MB. The amount is multiplied by the number of days in your trip.
Can I change a preset profile?
Yes. Pick a profile, then adjust the times. Your selection switches to Custom and the total updates straight away.
Is data used on Wi-Fi counted?
No. Only enter the time you expect to spend on mobile data. If you download content on Wi-Fi before heading out, don’t add it to your mobile usage.
How can I save data while travelling?
Download your maps and playlists on Wi-Fi, lower the video quality and limit automatic backups on mobile data.
How do I track what I’ve already used?
Check data usage in your phone’s network settings. For your Wellroam eSIM, use Track my eSIM in the menu.
Does hotspot sharing use my plan?
Yes. Devices connected to your phone’s hotspot use its mobile data. Remember to include their usage in your estimate.
Does trip length change the result?
Yes. The daily estimate is multiplied by the length you enter. Your plan’s validity also needs to cover your travel dates.
Which activities use the most data?
Video, video calls and large files can make up a big part of your usage. Lowering the video quality helps you save data.
Do downloaded maps work offline?
Areas saved in advance can reduce the data needed for navigation. Some features, like live traffic, may still use the internet.
Should I count automatic updates?
Yes, if they run over mobile data. You can limit them to Wi-Fi in your device settings to keep better control of your usage.
Does a WhatsApp call count as a message?
The calculation separates written messages from video calls. If you video chat often, add that time to the Video calls row.
